Haiku for you…

Last week, as writers tend to do, I hit a bit of writer’s block.  To force myself to write something, I challenged myself to a deadline. I posted a Facebook status that stated I would write a haiku for each of the first 10 people to “like” the post.  I liked this exercise.  Maybe I’ll do it regularly.  Feel free to steal it. Below are the results as promised…

Monica Gerstemeier
Words are the smallest
element. They connect us
in ways classrooms can’t.

Tracey Whitaker
A breathe of city,
air is the letting go of.
Our duty? React.

Arrian Wissel
We hold in our fists
the orange and blue of skylines
and the law of hours.

Anne Ramsell Dowd
The hallways have ghosts.
There are homes that won’t leave us
in rows like lockers.

Ryan Hodgson-Rigsbee
Yes, in this we are
in accord. A record of
friendship in snapshots.

Mehmet Can Kose
Much like Weißbier
or a good book of poems,
we find truth in here.

D.J. Nichols
The transition from
morp gossip to adulthood
ain’t so bad, is it?

Rebecca Noel
Oak Park City is
the hardcore place to parkour,
the business buzz.

Dawn Marie Galtieri
The commonage of
open hands gives voice to the
city we live in.

Ann Petroliunas
We dance like Ms. Ann
is watching. To celebrate,
we must learn the steps.

The NBA is making fun of me.

Yesterday, Tom Hanks was making fun of me.  Today, The New York Knicks take a stab.  At least Poetry Slam is in the public eye enough to get the NBA’s attention. Iman Shumpert, point guard for the Knicks was one of my former Oak Park River Forest High School Slam Team students.  He’s a talented writer and been an advocate for poetry (check this!).  I wonder what he thinks of this poster?

Also, the Chicago Bulls wouldn’t pull this. Just sayin’.

Oak Park River Forest High School: Louder Than a Bomb

LTABLouder Than a Bomb is the Chicagoland area youth poetry slam. It’s put on by a wonderful organization called Young Chicago Authors (www.youngchicagoauthors.org). You may have heard about them recently because of Mayor Rahm Emmanuel’s generous donation to the non-profit. Louder Than a Bomb is the largest team poetry slam in the world. This year 74 teams competed for 4 slots to the finals taking place on Saturday March 12 at the Vic Theater in Chicago.

The following videos are four of the six members of the team I coached alongside Peter Kahn, Milton McKinney, Jay Lind and David Gilmer. The two members I wish I had footage of are the very talented Cailynn C’mone and Sherry Reuter. The entire team is so talented, humble, and kind. They all deserve their shout-outs. In case you reeeally need to know, they won their semi-final bout and are in the top four teams competing on finals stage this Saturday! Congrats to Raven Hogue for also qualifying for the individual finals!

14th Anniversary of Notorious B.I.G.’s Passing

Notorious B.I.G.“The greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th/God bless his soul rest in peace kid/It’s because of him now at least I know what beef is.” -Canibus

I didn’t listen to much music until I hit middle school; a product of circumstance. In junior high kids tend to define themselves by the music they listen to. I was a skateboarder. Skate videos were often soundtracked by rap. I was a white kid from the near west suburbs of Chicago, raised in a very loving supportive home, and allowed a certain amount of privilege. Still, aggressive, often violent, grimey rap took me under the wing.

It was obvious Gangster Rap wasn’t created to speak to me, but it did. Not because I tucked nines in the waist line or knew much of what any of it meant, but more so because I related to the anger; feeling the world wasn’t as it should be. Eventually, I found my way to the Hip Hop that made more sense to who I am and helped form the world I live in now. To this day I have more Notorious B.I.G. lyrics memorized than any other artist, including my own poetry. Today is the 14th anniversary of his death and I’m still bobbing my head like it was the first time…
